Support Your Team with a Mental Health First Aid® Course

A 2022 report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that about 1 in 5 Australians had experienced a mental health issue in the previous 12 months. That means mental illness is a growing problem, and it’s something that effective managers need to be on the lookout for.

To ensure you’re equipped to deal with the mental wellbeing of your employees, MiTraining offers mental health first aid training courses as in-person MHFA™ workshops and online blended delivery. In-house MHFA™ corporate delivery for organisations is also available.

We deliver courses designed by Mental Health First Aid® Australia, which is on a mission to provide high-quality mental health education to everybody. MiTraining is here to support that goal.

During the Standard Mental Health First Aid® course, you will learn to understand mental health needs and support your team like never before and, on successful completion, receive your Mental Health First Aid® Certification.

The MHFA™ Standard course discusses some of the most common mental illnesses, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use

Mental Health First Aid Courses

The Standard Mental Health First Aid® course is designed for adults 18 years and over from every level of your business. During the course, you will learn how to provide initial support to other adults who are experiencing or developing a mental health problem.

The initial aid you provide can make all the difference, which is why this course is structured to cover major mental health events like:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Severe effects from alcohol or drug use
  • Aggressive behaviours

The Standard Mental Health First Aid® course focuses on preparing you with the skills and confidence to approach these issues. By building your confidence in handling mental health issues, you’ll be able to help your team, build stronger workplaces and improve the wellbeing of the people around you.

Mental Health First Aid® FAQs

  • What Exactly is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA™)?

Think of it like standard physical first aid, but for the mental health of those around you. Mental Health First Aid® is the first support provided to someone who is developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing condition, or in a mental health crisis (like a panic attack or suicidal thoughts).

Just as you would apply a bandage before the ambulance arrives, an MHFAider® provides support until professional help is reached or the crisis resolves.

  • Do I Need to be a Medical Professional to Take This Course?

Not at all! In fact, MHFA™ courses is specifically designed for the general public. Whether you are a manager, a professional, or a parent, this training gives you a practical framework to help without needing a clinical background.

Our goal is to empower Australians in the workplace and day-to-day life to feel confident and competent to offer support to those who require assistance in a time of need.

  • Is the MHFA Course Nationally Accredited in Australia?

Mental Health First Aid® is an internationally recognised, evidence-based accreditation.

After completing your course training through MiTraining, you can sit a short online assessment to become an Accredited Mental Health First Aider™, which is highly regarded by employers across Australia.

This accreditation is valid for three years before a Refresher course is required.

  • What is the ALGEE® Action Plan?

The ALGEE® action plan is the evidence-based protocol you will learn during the course. It helps you stay grounded when supporting someone in distress.

A - Approach, assess, and assist with any crisis

    L - Listen and communicate non-judgmentally

G - Give support and information

E - Encourage appropriate professional help

E - Encourage other supports (like family or community)

  • Why Should My Workplace Invest in MHFA™ Training?

Beyond “ticking a box”, it makes good business sense.

Mental health challenges cost Australian workplaces billions each year in lost productivity, burnout and absenteeism. Read more about what this could cost you and your team.

Having a trained MHFAider® on-site helps foster a supportive culture, reduces stigma, and mitigates psychosocial hazards.

  • Does Mental Health First Aid® Cover Crisis Situations Like Suicide or Self-Harm?

Yes, it does. We tackle these sensitive topics with the care and professionalism they deserve.

You will learn how to identify the warning signs of a crisis and, most importantly, how to stay calm and follow a clear set of steps to keep the person safe until professional services are accessible.

  • How Long Does the Training Take, and Where is it Held?

Our public MHFA™ face-to-face courses typically run over two full days. We find the face-to-face format is the best way to practice conversations in a safe, supportive environment with our expert trainers. Secure your place in our upcoming face-to-face delivery dates.

MiTraining also provides flexible mental health first aid training options, including blended online and corporate delivery for your workplace.
