This short course will help you build the skills and knowledge required to establish relationships, clarify needs, and work collaboratively with people who are living with mental health issues.
It is designed for support workers in contexts outside the mental health sector, but who come into contact with people with mental health issues. The services and support provided are not mental health specific.
Course Content
This course is structured into three modules:
1. Establish respectful relationships with people with mental health issues
- Communication
- Rights of Individuals
- Respect for differences
- Support the rights of individuals
- Confidentiality and privacy
2. Determine the needs of people with mental health issues
- Gather and interpret information
- Individual identity and preferences
- Duty of care
3. Work with people with mental health issues to meet aspirations and needs
- Progress towards goals
- Uphold the person's rights
- Service delivery
- Distress or crisis
- Personal limits
